Urushi (lacquer) is a traditional coating material that has been used in Japan for centuries. The sap of the lacquer tree is collected drop by drop and has been used to reinforce and decorate vessels.

Handling urushi is not easy; when it is in liquid form, it can cause skin irritation upon contact, and it takes time to harden. However, this craft, which does not require fire, is one of the most natural forms of human creation. Furthermore, the possibilities for expression with urushi are limitless.

In this exhibition, we aim to explore the characteristics of the material, its history, and its future potential by showcasing various urushi works. We will also highlight the people who create lacquerware, particularly those involved in Wajima-nuri. Wajima-nuri is currently at risk, having been impacted by unprecedented natural disasters. Through the stories told about urushi, we hope to convey the thoughts and emotions of the people who create with it.
