Aso Rando -an Artist of earth ware-

Aso Rando – earth ware ceramist-

Aso, Rando is a young emerging ceramic artist. He was born in 1983 in Nara, Japan. He studied in Kanazawa college of Art majored in ceramic, exploring the expressions of the clay with firing, the origin of ceramic. Currently he settled down in Tokoname, Aichi prefecture, where one of the oldest kilns was built in Japan. He has exhibited in many exhibitions including Art triennial in Echigotsumari, Nigata prefecture in 2015.

His technique is very simple and natural.  He fires the pieces not in the kiln but in the fire on the ground, like the Jomon period earth wares (2,500- 1,500 BC). This firing causes the difference in the color on the ceramic skin. As he uses reddish clay from Tokoname, it shows various colours, yellow, red and black. Very little control can be done. Hence, he chooses the best of bests from tons of biscuit wares. It is not efficient production, and the result is whimsical. This is, however, the reason that makes this piece unique and very attractive art piece, the fruit of fire and earth.

With Aso’s conduct, the charm of mystery in the simplest and ancient ceramic making reconstructed in the concept of contemporary ceramic.  He carries on the search on infinitive possibility of the communication of clay and fire.
