Ando, Ryosuke – Ceramic designer & Ceramist –
ANDŌ, Ryosuke is a young emerging ceramic artist based in Aichi prefecture in Japan. He creates the ceramics with slip casting techniques, and his works have been awarded in many ceramic design competitions.
His ceramic production is entirely by him: designing, making models, forming, firing. His works are classified into porcelain. Porcelain is a very hard and half-transparent ceramic, the clay consists of kaolin, which requires higher temperature (1200-1400 °C) to be baked.
His technique “slip casting” allows to make many and precise pieces. A liquid clay body slip is poured into plaster mould and make a layer, the cast, on the inside cavity of the mould. The mould absorbs the water of the slip, and once the mould is removed, the clay is solidly formed. His works are formed with the cast but finished up by hands. He curves and polishes the surface one by one.
The finishing step is firing. It requires meticulous control, as porcelain deforms easily in the kiln. Also applying silver or gold, which is the last part of firing, certainly requires painstaking care to have the exact colour. Firing could alternate the colour of metal easily and leaves black points on the ceramic snow-white skin.
Ando obtains highly meticulous techniques. Simultaneously, he is very talented designer and ceramic artist.
